For today's lesson, we had to compare and contrast the search effectiveness of Google and Google Scholar by using the Common Boolean operators with keywords and variations. Besides that, we learnt the use of citation and Bibilography. We also had to participate in a discussion forum that is relevant to our research topic.
I was impressed by google's search functions and features. All these times that I've been using google, I've never really known how useful it can be. Google has the feature 'I'm Feeling Lucky!'. This feature enables the user to be taken directly to the search result, bypassing the search engine result page. It also has a translation service which allows English speakers to access non-English web pages. Google also supports the use of phrase searching, parentheses and the Common Boolean operaters. These helps to specify the search query, enabling the user to retrieve relevant web pages.
I was nervous in participating in a discussion forum initially, as I wasn't sure if anyone would reply to my thread. However, my thread was replied as soon as I submitted it. I was excited when i received at email about someone replying to my thread. It was helpful to my research, which is the effects of eating disorders in teenagers. I was looking into the effects of someone suffering from aneroxia nervosa. I posted a question asking about what do they do during theraphy. To me that was part of the effects of aneroxia nervosa. And the person replied 3 paragraphs long! It shows me that he/she is willing to answer my question even though I'm a total stranger. Now I feel that I can participate actively in online discussion forums and expand my knowledge.
Citations acknowledges the source of information. It avoids plagiarism. Bibliography lists the research that one has done for his/her research.
